Hey everyone, today I must report a serious matter. I was contacted by an artist on Etsy claiming that I "stole" her idea of crafting dragons in pods. Without warning, she has apparently reported me to the Design and copyright society (or claims to). The following is our exchange:
Artist claiming theft: "I understand that that no idea is original. However you have completely copied my dragons.I have no choice but to report you to the Design and copyright society...Thankfully I have loyal customers and I have been notified by them .
Please..make up your own ideas,i have two kids to feed, this just is not on.
Myself: "First of all, I have no idea where you get off claiming an artistic idea as solely yours, this alone baffles me. Secondly, I have been doing my craft for 4 years and have never once seen your page or artwork anywhere online or offline. Clearly you feel threatened by me, and again I do not understand why. Our styles and techniques are vastly different, the only similarity being the pods. I suggest you look elsewhere online to see that this idea has been done before and done differently many times. The fact that you are getting so defensive specifically about an item that comes from NATURE is laughable. Maybe, if our dragons were exactly similar in craft I would see a bit of your argument, but that is not the case. Looking through your store I respect your work and talent. You are obviously a wonderful artist, but its very petty of you to try and claim this idea as yours and yours alone. Lastly, please don't try to throw your children into this to gain sympathy. I am not sitting on this side of the fence rolling in cash, but I would never attack another artist for a similar idea and bring up my personal struggles to try and gain moral ground.
I will be posting this up for the public to read.
The purpose of posting this up is to protect myself. I have not, nor ever intend to steal another artists work. 4 years ago, I was walking to my fiances house when I picked up a pod from the ground. At this point in my life I did not consider myself a crafter so much as an illustrator (which is still true to a degree) but at the time looking at the pod I felt inspired to put something inside of it. Dragons naturally being my favorite fantasy creature, it was my first choice. The rest is history, but the point of this story is is that I came to my idea independently. For this artist to message me out of the blue, calling me a thief, and giving me no opportunity to explain has upset me greatly. So again, I'm writing this journal to explain my position publicly and be as transparent about this ongoing issue as possible.
If anyone out there reading this has any similar experiences to share or input, I would love to hear it!
*For the moment I am going to keep this artists identity anonymous
